Birmingham Man Jailed for Stealing Over £800k from Family Business

Shuaib Hussain, aged 24, has been jailed for four years and 10 months after stealing more than £800,000 from a family business where he was employed as a bookkeeper and accounts manager. The fraud, which involved nearly 400 illegal transactions, was uncovered when the company noticed discrepancies in payments to suppliers.

Details of the Fraud

Hussain, of Frederick Road, Stechford, was hired in 2023 at the age of 21. He abused his trusted position to transfer funds to himself, totaling over £823,000. The total cost to the company, including tax implications, exceeded £1 million. The stolen money was spent on perfumes, cosmetic goods, expensive clothes, accessories, and electrical items. Hussain also used the funds to donate thousands of pounds to online gamers streaming on Twitch and maintained a fake online persona to contact women.

Court Proceedings

At Birmingham Crown Court, the business director testified that Hussain showed no remorse and allegedly told relatives his only regret was getting caught before taking more. The director described the betrayal as a 'bitter pill to swallow,' noting that the family business was built over a lifetime of work by his father. Hussain's defence barrister, Ahmed Muen, disputed the claim of no remorse, stating that Hussain had expressed regret and repaid £75,000. Muen attributed the crimes to a 'breakaway from what was going on in his personal life' following the death of Hussain's father in September 2023, which left him with additional caring responsibilities.

Sentencing

Hussain pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position and was sentenced to four years and 10 months. The court heard that the first unauthorized transfer of £10,000 went unnoticed, encouraging him to continue. The business, which remains unnamed to spare further reputational damage, continues to suffer from the financial and emotional impact of the fraud.
