Major UK Burger Chain Meatliquor Shuts Down Five Restaurants Nationwide
Meatliquor Closes Five UK Restaurants, Keeps Only Two Open

Major UK Burger Chain Meatliquor Undergoes Drastic Restructuring with Multiple Closures

In a significant blow to the UK dining scene, the well-known burger chain Meatliquor has announced the closure of more than half of its restaurants across the country. The chain is currently implementing a major restructuring plan, which involves shutting down five of its branches, leaving only two locations operational.

Only Two Restaurants Remain Open After Widespread Shutdowns

The brand will continue to serve customers at its Oxford Circus and East Dulwich venues in London. Additionally, the group's sister establishment, BLOODsports bar located in Covent Garden, will remain open. However, restaurants in Islington, Clapham Junction, Queensway, Brighton, and Leeds have all been permanently closed.

Founder Cites Economic Pressures and Industry Challenges

Founder Scott Collins explained the difficult decision to Restaurant Online, stating that the company is facing the same challenges as many others in the hospitality industry. He emphasized the need to take proactive measures before being forced into action by circumstances.

Collins highlighted several key factors contributing to the closures:

  • Rising cost of living affecting consumer spending
  • Increased costs for beef and other essential ingredients
  • Elevated energy prices impacting operational expenses
  • Ongoing VAT and business rate pressures
  • Geopolitical uncertainties creating market instability
  • Transport disruptions including tube strikes affecting London operations

From Street Food Van to Multi-Location Chain

Meatliquor began as a London street food van operated by founders Scott Collins and Yianni Papoutsis. The brand opened its first permanent restaurant in Marylebone in 2011 and expanded significantly over the following years. At its peak in 2018, the chain operated 11 outlets across London, including popular locations such as Meat Mission in Hoxton and Meat Market in Covent Garden.

Financial Challenges and Strategic Decisions

Collins revealed to The Telegraph in April of last year that he could not foresee the business generating any profit in the upcoming financial year, even with the opening of a new site. He described the company's financial situation as particularly challenging, with empty coffers necessitating difficult decisions.

The company released an official statement expressing gratitude to supporters, visitors, and employees while confirming the permanent closures. The statement noted that while most locations are now closed for good, customers can still find Meatliquor in London, promising the same experience at different addresses.

Until recently, the group maintained seven sites across London along with individual locations in Brighton and Leeds. The current restructuring represents a significant contraction for a brand that once represented a thriving segment of the UK casual dining market.
