Patty & Bun Announces Sudden Closure of Half Its UK Restaurants
In a surprising move, the major UK burger chain Patty & Bun has confirmed it is shutting down nearly half of its restaurants across the country. The chain, often hailed as one of the UK's premier "better burger" establishments, made the announcement today, leaving the industry and customers in shock.
Details of the Closures
Patty & Bun has permanently closed four significant London sites, drastically reducing its standalone restaurant presence to just two locations. The affected restaurants include:
- Marylebone on James Street
- Soho’s Kingly Street
- Liverpool Street
- Northcote Road in Clapham
Despite these closures, the chain will continue to operate a small number of "concessions" within other venues, maintaining a limited footprint in the market.
Company Statement and Gratitude
In an emotional statement, the group expressed its appreciation for the communities it served. "We’ve loved being part of these communities and just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s walked through these doors. It’s been a privilege to serve you," the company said.
The statement also extended gratitude to current and former employees, highlighting their dedication: "To our teams past and present, the graft, the energy, the madness and the love you put into every shift… we’re endlessly grateful."
Challenges and Future Outlook
Founder Joe Grossmann, who launched Patty & Bun as a pop-up venture, had previously warned of "challenging" trading conditions and rising operational costs. These factors have contributed to the difficult decision to scale back the business.
However, the chain remains optimistic about its future. "This isn’t goodbye to Patty & Bun. It’s just the end of this chapter," the statement added, suggesting potential restructuring or new ventures ahead.
Current Operations and Services
Patty & Bun continues to offer its services through remaining outlets and concessions. The chain operates as a cashless restaurant, accepting only card or contactless payments. Customers can still purchase gift vouchers in denominations ranging from £15 to £100, valid for 12 months and delivered electronically.
The menu includes gluten-free options and a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes, available both in-store and through delivery platforms like Just Eat and Deliveroo. Reservations can be made via the chain's website, ensuring continued accessibility for loyal patrons.
