Birmingham Surpasses European Capitals to Become a Fastest-Rising City

Birmingham has achieved a significant milestone by being named one of Europe's fastest-rising cities, according to a major study released today. The city climbed two places in the annual ranking, now positioning itself ahead of larger capitals such as Prague and well-known European hubs including Oslo, Copenhagen, and Rotterdam.

How the Ranking Works

Each year, consultancy ING compiles a list of Europe's most talked-about cities by measuring online mentions across news outlets, digital publications, and social media platforms. This ranking serves as a key indicator of a city's visibility in online conversations, which is closely linked to its ability to attract tourism, investment, business, and overall prosperity.

The 2026 report expanded from 60 to 70 cities across Europe, reflecting increased competition as more places generate attention. Despite this tougher landscape and many cities slipping down the table, Birmingham demonstrated strong momentum by rising in the rankings.

A City Reshaping Its Story

Lucie Murray, Head of Cities at ING, commented on Birmingham's ascent, stating, "Birmingham's climb in the ranking reflects a city that's actively reshaping both its reality and its reputation. Major city-centre reconfiguration, new public spaces, and better-integrated transport are signalling intent as well as momentum."

She added, "At the same time, Birmingham's cultural legacy has become more visible. The global tributes following the death of Ozzy Osbourne in 2025 sparked renewed attention on the city's contribution to music, reminding the world about Birmingham's global cultural impact."

Trusted Coverage and Positive Focus

Damian Wild, Managing Director at ING, emphasized the importance of where coverage originates, saying, "In a crowded online environment, being talked about is one thing. Being talked about in the places people trust is another. In a year when competition intensified and many cities fell back, Birmingham moved forward on both counts."

He noted, "After a period caught in the headlines for the wrong reasons, the focus is finally shifting to the city's many strengths, and rightly so." This shift highlights Birmingham's growing reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking urban centre.

While major capitals like Paris continue to dominate the top spots, the strongest momentum in the ranking comes from cities that are building clearer and more confident narratives about themselves. Birmingham's rise underscores its successful efforts in enhancing both its physical infrastructure and cultural visibility on the European stage.
