DWP Benefits Rule Change: Motability Pauses Black Box Requirement
DWP Benefits Rule Change: Motability Pauses Black Box

From Friday, May 22, the Motability Scheme, administered by Motability Operations for Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) claimants, will pause its mandatory black box rule. This change affects individuals receiving one of six DWP benefits.

Benefits Affected

The Motability Scheme is utilized by claimants of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Adult Disability Payment, Child Disability Payment, Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance, and War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement.

Drive Smart Program Paused

Motability will begin removing customers from the Drive Smart scheme, which allowed motorists to monitor their driving habits and receive feedback on areas for improvement. The rollout of Drive Smart is being paused following backlash from users.

Drive Smart is a small device discreetly installed in vehicles. It connects to a mobile app, providing feedback on driving behavior such as speed, acceleration, and braking. By driving safely, participants could earn rewards usable at major retailers like Asda and M&S.

CEO Statement

Andrew Miller, CEO of Motability Operations, explained the decision: "That is why we have decided to pause Drive Smart while we work with customers to understand how it can be improved. The need to reduce accidents, improve driving behaviour and help to manage insurance costs remains critical for the Scheme's long-term sustainability, and technology like Drive Smart can play an important role. But it must be clear, easy-to-use and support the independence of the disabled people who rely on the Scheme."

How Drive Smart Works

According to Motability, individual trip scores indicate driving quality for specific journeys, shown as green, amber, or red based on speed, cornering, braking, and acceleration. Weekly scores combine all trips, with longer journeys weighted more heavily. Weekly scores determine rewards eligibility, while individual trips provide improvement tips. A single red trip is not concerning, but a weekly red score prompts recommendations for improvement via the app.
