FCDO Warns UK Tourists of Ebola Health Screening in Kenya
UK Tourists Face Ebola Health Screening in Kenya

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Kenya, warning UK tourists that they may face enhanced health screening for Ebola upon arrival. The screening measures are being implemented due to an ongoing Ebola outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Enhanced Screening Measures

The FCDO stated: "Travellers arriving in Kenya, particularly those coming from Uganda, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), may be subject to enhanced health screening measures due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak centred in the DRC." The advisory emphasizes that travel insurance could be invalidated if individuals travel against FCDO recommendations.

Criticism of Travel Bans

A US travel ban targeting people from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan in response to the Ebola outbreak has drawn criticism. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) argued that generalized travel restrictions and border closures are not the solution to outbreaks. The organization warned that such measures can create fear, damage economies, discourage transparency, complicate humanitarian and health operations, and divert movement toward informal routes, potentially increasing public health risks.

Africa CDC highlighted a deeper structural injustice in global health innovation, noting that the Bundibugyo Ebola virus was identified nearly two decades ago, yet no licensed vaccines or therapeutics specific to this strain exist today. The organization suggested that if the disease had predominantly threatened wealthier regions, medical countermeasures would likely already be available.

Call for Partnership

Dr. Githinji Gitahi, group CEO at Amref Health Africa, supported Africa CDC's stance, stating: "Travel bans don't stop viruses, they stop solidarity. The fastest way to protect everyone is to invest in outbreak control at the source, not isolate the affected. Africa needs partnership, not punishment."
