Thousands of BMW drivers across the UK are now facing a significant motoring expense, with new data revealing a substantial cost per mile for operating their vehicles.
The 14p per mile reality for BMW owners
Recent analysis indicates that drivers of the popular BMW 3 Series are burning through approximately 14p per mile in fuel costs. This calculation comes as the national average petrol price stands at 135.55p per litre, according to RAC Fuel Watch data.
The 2025 versions of this beloved model can achieve up to 44.1mpg in normal driving conditions, building on the car's reputation for excellent fuel efficiency. With half a million 3 Series models currently on UK roads, this cost impact affects a substantial number of motorists.
How hybrid models compare
Interestingly, drivers using alternative fuel sources might face even higher costs. Many owners of the BMW 330e plug-in hybrid report achieving around 50mpg or higher on roads, but there's an important caveat.
WhichCar? explains: "The BMW 330e is officially capable of excellent fuel economy, but you'll need to charge it up regularly to achieve that."
A full charge typically takes about two and a quarter hours when using an 11kW home EV charger, adding another consideration for cost-conscious drivers.
How BMW compares to competitors
The analysis also compared the BMW against its direct rivals in the premium saloon market. The 320i petrol model officially averages 43.5mpg, which falls slightly below the 45.6mpg achieved by the mild hybrid Mercedes C200.
This new cost reality emerges as drivers nationwide continue to navigate fluctuating fuel prices and consider the long-term economics of their vehicle choices in an increasingly expensive motoring landscape.
