British Gas Energy Trust Unveils £1,700 Support Grants for Prepayment Meter Customers
British Gas has announced significant new financial support for households struggling with energy debt. The energy giant's charitable arm, the British Gas Energy Trust, has launched the Individuals and Families Fund, which offers grants of up to £1,700 specifically targeted at prepayment meter customers.
Eligibility Criteria and Grant Details
The fund is designed to assist those who have accumulated debt on their prepayment meters, with the grants intended to clear arrears and promote financial stability. Importantly, eligibility is not restricted to British Gas customers alone; households with other energy suppliers may also apply for assistance.
To qualify for a grant, households must meet the following conditions:
- Have energy debt ranging from £50 to £1,700 on a prepayment meter
- Reside in England, Scotland, or Wales
- Have received professional money advice within the past six months
The exact grant amount awarded will depend on the individual's level of debt and circumstances.
Addressing a Widespread Challenge
This initiative comes at a critical time, as geopolitical tensions, including the Iran war, threaten to drive up energy bills across the UK, exacerbating existing cost of living pressures. The British Gas Energy Trust highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that approximately 40% of prepayment meter users are currently repaying energy debt.
"For many households, keeping on top of bills can feel overwhelming," a spokesperson for the Trust stated. "Millions across the UK face this challenge every year, often while juggling other essential costs like rent, food, and council tax. That's where the Individuals and Families Fund can help."
The fund aims to provide a lifeline to those caught in energy debt, offering grants that are not tied to any specific energy supplier. This approach ensures broader accessibility, allowing more households to move towards greater financial security without the burden of energy arrears.
