Petrol and diesel drivers across the UK are set to save approximately £40 a year thanks to the Labour Party Fuel Finder tool, a system that requires petrol stations to report fuel price changes within 30 minutes. The initiative, originally championed by former Chancellor Rachel Reeves, continues to expand under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who has appointed John Healey as the new Chancellor.
How the Fuel Finder Works
Under the new regulations, fuel retailers must register their forecourts through an online portal and notify the scheme of any price adjustments within half an hour of implementation. This real-time data collection aims to increase transparency and competition among stations, ultimately benefiting consumers.
Minister for Energy Consumers, Martin McCluskey MP, stated: “The scheme will drive up competition and is set to see working families save around £40 a year at the pump.” The tool is designed to empower drivers by providing them with the information needed to locate the cheapest fuel in their area.
Industry and Government Support
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, described the launch as “the start of the journey to cheaper fuel prices around the UK.” He emphasized that the initiative marks a significant step toward fairer pricing for motorists.
When the scheme was first introduced, Ms Reeves said: “My priority is protecting family finances and standing up for drivers — and Fuel Finder puts power back into their hands. By giving drivers the information they need to see where fuel is cheapest locally, they can avoid being overcharged and continue to fill up as normal.” She also highlighted additional government measures, including extending the 5p fuel duty cut to September, reducing energy bills by £117 from April, and providing targeted support for heating oil costs.
Integration with Third-Party Tools
Steve Dukes, CEO at Confused.com, noted that their Petrol Prices tool already helps tens of thousands of motorists monthly. He added: “By integrating with Fuel Finder, drivers will have a better, real-time view of prices near them to help them find the cheapest option and save money. Fuel Finder is a positive step towards making motoring costs more affordable for drivers. More accurate and accessible data is important in so many aspects of cost and pricing in all industries, and we’re pleased to see how this is being applied to things like fuel where visibility of pricing has historically been limited.”
