Sainsbury's Launches Major Fuel Discount Scheme for Loyalty Card Holders

A leading UK supermarket has introduced a significant fuel discount initiative, allowing motorists to save 5p per litre at more than 1,200 Esso service stations nationwide. This offer is part of a loyalty scheme where drivers can exchange 300 Nectar points for the discount, providing relief amid soaring petrol and diesel costs.

How the Discount Works

To access the savings, customers must purchase a minimum of 10 litres of fuel. They can then scan their Nectar card or use the Esso App during payment to swap 300 Nectar points for the 5p per litre reduction. Esso has confirmed that this option is available at all participating locations, making it a widespread opportunity for cost-conscious drivers.

Earning Nectar Points

Motorists can accumulate Nectar points in several ways. When refuelling at Esso stations, they earn one point per litre of fuel purchased. Additionally, spending in Esso service station shops yields two points for every £1 spent. Shopping at Sainsbury's stores also contributes, with customers receiving one point per £1 spent in-store, further enhancing the value of the loyalty program.

Rising Fuel Prices in the UK

This discount comes at a critical time, as official data reveals sharp increases in fuel prices across the UK. Since late February, petrol has surged by 19% in Northern Ireland, while diesel prices have jumped by 35%, ranking among the highest rises in Europe. By early April, filling a 50-litre tank averaged £75 for petrol and £91 for diesel, compared to £63 and £67 respectively in late February.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that petrol prices have climbed nearly 22p per litre since the onset of recent conflicts, reaching an average of 154.45p. He described the current prices as "eye-watering," with diesel experiencing an even more dramatic spike, rising 9p in just one week to an average of 185.23p per litre.

Impact on Drivers

The fuel discount scheme offers a practical solution for motorists facing financial strain from escalating costs. With petrol and diesel prices at levels not seen since late 2023 and 2022 respectively, this initiative provides a timely reprieve. Drivers are encouraged to take advantage of the offer to mitigate the impact of the ongoing price hikes, especially during peak travel periods like the Easter weekend.
