Sky Mobile Implements Monthly Price Increase for Data Tariffs

Millions of Sky Mobile customers across the UK are set to experience an unwelcome change to their bills starting from Saturday morning, February 14. The telecommunications giant has confirmed that data tariffs will increase by £1.50 per month, with the adjustments appearing on customer statements from tomorrow.

This price hike will add approximately £18 to the annual cost of a typical data plan, impacting a significant portion of Sky Mobile's user base. A spokesperson for Sky Mobile explained the decision, stating, “To continue delivering the quality, service, and value our customers expect, most Sky Mobile customers will see a £1.50 increase to their monthly bill from February.”

Reasons Behind the Price Adjustment

The company emphasized that this move was not taken lightly, highlighting that they have not increased mobile prices for in-contract customers in over seven years. The previous price rise last year was specifically targeted at users who were out of contract.

Sky Mobile attributes the increase to several factors, primarily noting that wholesale network costs have risen substantially since the previous year. The spokesperson added, “This change reflects the ongoing cost pressures being faced across the industry, while allowing us to continue investing in our network and customer experience.”

Exceptions and Consumer Advice

In a separate announcement, Sky confirmed that it will freeze prices for social tariff customers for the fourth consecutive year. This means individuals on supported low-income plans will not face any additional charges.

Consumer finance expert Martin Lewis, known for his appearances on BBC and ITV, offered crucial advice to affected customers. He stated, “The most important thing to understand here is if you get a price hike notification and you're in contract, you have a right to leave your contract within 30 days.”

Lewis further cautioned that this 30-day period begins from the receipt of notification, not from the date the price increase takes effect, which often leads to missed opportunities. He advised, “Everyone who gets a notification should then be checking 'can I get a cheaper deal?' and is it worth leaving? If it is, get on with it, and even if you've a year left on your contract, you've a month to ditch and switch with no penalty, no consequences.”

This price adjustment marks a significant shift for Sky Mobile, as it represents the first mid-contract increase for many users in more than seven years. Customers are encouraged to review their billing statements carefully and explore their options regarding contract terms and alternative providers.
