Major UK Banks Announce Widespread Branch Closures for 2026 and 2027
In a significant shift for the UK banking sector, Lloyds Bank, NatWest, and Santander have confirmed plans to close a total of 244 branches across the country in 2026 and 2027. This move reflects the ongoing trend towards digital banking and reduced footfall in physical locations.
Closure Details and Banking Hubs
The closures include 53 Lloyds Bank branches, 31 Halifax branches, and 11 Bank of Scotland sites, all part of the Lloyds Banking Group. In response, 15 new banking hubs will be established nationwide to provide in-person services for customers who prefer or require face-to-face banking support.
A spokeswoman for Lloyds Banking Group stated: “Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before. From our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service to local banking options like our community bankers, PayPoint and access to all of our Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches, we’re giving our customers the flexibility to bank wherever and whenever they need us.”
