Birmingham Gunmakers Arms Closes Permanently Despite Ozzy Revamp
Birmingham Gunmakers Arms Closes Permanently

The Gunmakers Arms, a historic pub on Bath Street in Birmingham city centre, has closed permanently just six months after reopening with Ozzy Osbourne-themed artwork. Owner Mason Newman, who previously collaborated with Madonna, confirmed the pub will not reopen again.

Reasons for Closure

Newman cited rising operational costs, higher taxes, and ongoing economic pressures as making it impossible for independent venues to survive. He described the decision as 'heartbreaking' for himself, staff, and customers who supported the pub during its brief reopening.

'I invested my time, energy, creativity and finances into breathing new life into a historic Birmingham pub and creating a welcoming space for the community. Unfortunately, the reality facing hospitality businesses today is incredibly tough,' Newman said.

Challenges Facing Pubs

The Gunmakers Arms had 'not been immune' to the current climate and challenges facing pubs across the country. Specific factors include rising operating costs, increasing employer costs, higher taxes, and broader economic pressures that have made it increasingly difficult for independent venues to survive.

Community Response

Newman expressed gratitude to the Birmingham community, stating: 'Birmingham has shown me a great deal of kindness, and I will always be thankful for that.' He is now focusing on his health and wellbeing while continuing his work as an artist.

The pub, which dates back 200 years, initially closed in summer 2025 and reopened in December with rock 'n' roll-themed artwork featuring Ozzy Osbourne. Despite the revamp, it could not overcome the financial pressures facing the hospitality industry.
