Birmingham Hospitality Sector Faces Tough Times, New Report Finds
Birmingham Hospitality Sector Faces Tough Times

Birmingham's hospitality sector is facing a "tough environment" due to mounting economic pressures, according to a new West Midlands Night-Time Economy Commission report.

Report Highlights Challenges

The commission has published 25 recommendations aimed at making the sector more vibrant, accessible and safe. Issues including the Covid pandemic, the cost of living crisis, VAT and business rates have severely impacted night-time businesses.

Henry Poultney, owner of Grace and James in Kings Heath, said: "It's a tough environment at the moment to be a hospitality business."

Jack Brabant, who runs Herbert's Yard in Longbridge and co-founded Digbeth Dining Club, emphasised the need for industry voices in decision-making. He said businesses are "seeing people with less money in their pockets" due to the cost of living crisis.

Business Owners Speak Out

Both business owners joined the commission to bring their expertise to help create positive change. They highlighted cash flow pressures and the difficulty of passing on rising costs to customers.

The report aims to address the financial challenges facing independent venues across Birmingham's hospitality sector. It calls for better support from local authorities and a review of tax policies that affect the night-time economy.

Among the 25 recommendations are measures to improve safety, extend transport options, and provide financial relief for struggling businesses. The commission hopes these steps will help revive Birmingham's nightlife and support local entrepreneurs.
