Birmingham's Mailbox Restaurant Ordered to Improve Hygiene After Failed Inspection
A Middle Eastern restaurant located within Birmingham's prestigious Mailbox complex has been formally instructed to enhance its hygiene practices following an unsuccessful inspection by regulatory authorities. At the time of the inspection, this establishment stood as the sole dining venue at The Mailbox to receive a failing grade, highlighting a significant concern amidst otherwise satisfactory performers.
Inspection Details and Scoring System
On January 6, the restaurant, known as Bazar, which offers Lebanese and Persian cuisine with a contemporary twist, was awarded a score of one by hygiene inspectors. According to the Food Standards Agency's rating system, this score indicates that major improvement is necessary. Any rating below three, which is classified as generally satisfactory, is considered a failure, placing Bazar in a critical position requiring immediate corrective action.
Cleanliness, food preparation, and safety protocols are all critical factors evaluated during these inspections, ensuring that establishments adhere to stringent public health standards. In contrast, all other restaurants at The Mailbox currently maintain the maximum score of five, denoting very good hygiene standards, as recorded on the Food Standards Agency website.
Council Response and Appeal Process
Birmingham City Council has confirmed that following an appeal by Bazar, the original rating was upheld. A council spokesperson elaborated on the process, stating, "In all cases, Food Hygiene Rating Scheme scores are calculated based on the conditions of food premises at the time an officer visits to carry out an inspection. Bazar appealed their score, with the original rating upheld. Once an appeal is finalised, the score is released on the Food Standard Agency’s website." The new rating is currently awaiting publication, pending the completion of administrative procedures.
Restaurant's Statement and Corrective Measures
In response to the inspection findings, a spokesperson for Bazar provided a detailed statement addressing the issues raised. "Our kitchen and premises is maintained to a very high standard; the Environmental Health Officer highlighted paperwork and procedural matters on January 6. These were immediately reviewed and corrected, and we have since implemented additional procedures and staff training to further strengthen our processes," the spokesperson explained.
The restaurant emphasized its commitment to food safety, noting that all identified issues were addressed within 24 hours of the inspection. "We take food safety extremely seriously. On January 6, all the issues identified were addressed within 24 hours, so the report from 2 months ago does not reflect the standards we operate to today," the statement continued. Additionally, Bazar has formally applied and paid for a re-inspection, asserting that the council mismanaged the process, but reaffirming that the safety and confidence of guests and staff remain the highest priority.
Background and Context
Bazar opened in November 2024 inside Harvey Nichols at The Mailbox, positioning itself as a modern Middle Eastern dining destination. The restaurant's management and staff regularly dine at the establishment themselves, underscoring their personal investment in maintaining high standards. This incident serves as a reminder of the rigorous hygiene inspections conducted across Birmingham's culinary scene, aimed at protecting public health and ensuring compliance with food safety regulations.
