The events are scheduled for specific dates: 12 August 2026, 2 August 2027, and 26 January 2028. According to science communicator Alfredo Rafael Rosenberg González, who wrote about this on the IAC blog earlier this week, careful planning is absolutely essential for optimal viewing.
The Spanish government, along with local authorities, has begun designating preferred observation points across Spain for viewing these solar eclipses. Among the three events, two will be total eclipses while one will be annular. This coordinated effort aims to ensure both safety and the best possible experience for observers.

Alfredo emphasized the importance of proper preparation, stating: "An event as exceptional as a solar eclipse should not be approached haphazardly." He recommends utilizing several websites and free programs that allow predictions of how the phenomenon will unfold. These tools make it easier to assess whether a chosen location is suitable for observation.
It's important to note that the upcoming eclipses in 2026, 2027, and 2028 will occur in Spain either at the beginning or end of the eclipse cycle, with the sun typically positioned near the horizon—either at sunrise or sunset. This positioning adds another layer of consideration for viewers.
Practical Viewing Considerations
Alfredo further explained: "By their very nature, solar eclipses make it easy to identify suitable viewing areas—and those that are not—simply by analyzing the shadows cast by surrounding geographical features."
He specifically mentioned the website ShadeMap (shademap.app) as a valuable tool for assessment. This application allows users to select their geographical area of interest, along with the specific date and time, showing how shadows are projected over time. This functionality makes it straightforward to check whether a chosen location will remain in shadow during the eclipse, which would prevent proper observation.
While weather conditions remain an additional factor to consider, avoiding shadows is absolutely essential for successful eclipse viewing.
