Digbeth's Major Revival: 4,000-Cap Venue, Giant Food Hall & Vinyl Pub Lead Regeneration
Digbeth's regeneration: New food hall, pub and venues revealed

Birmingham's vibrant Digbeth area is poised for a significant boost, with a wave of new and revamped venues set to open their doors. This exciting development cements the district's status as the city's thriving Creative Quarter, offering fresh reasons for locals and visitors to explore.

Major Expansions and New Destinations

Leading the charge is Forum Digbeth, which is undertaking a substantial expansion to create "The Annexe." This project will double the venue's capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 people, positioning it as a major hub for larger live music events, club nights, and social gatherings.

In another significant move, a colossal new food hall named Alfred Works is slated to open within the Custard Factory. Announced by the Blend Family, this 17,500 sq ft space will be a destination in itself, featuring 15 individual kitchens, an outdoor courtyard, and a social gaming area. It will also include a shop and a dedicated kids' zone with a sand pit.

Plans are already in place for Alfred Works to grow further, with an additional 10,000 sq ft extension proposed over the River Rea. This expansion will provide even more room for entertainment and dining, establishing a key new destination following BOXPARK's withdrawal from the area.

Historic Pub Revival and Cool Hangouts

Adding to the area's character, the historic O’Rourkes on Oxford Street is being brought back to life. Having been closed since 2018, it will reopen in 2026 as The Diggers Arms, reimagined as a traditional pub combined with a record shop and vinyl bar.

For those seeking a more active vibe, The Drop Inn is already open and gaining a reputation as a cool hang-out. This unique space blends a market, food spot, and music venue with a large indoor skate park complete with a miniramp.

A Catalyst for Wider Regeneration

These new ventures are pivotal components of the long-term regeneration strategy for Digbeth. They join other high-profile projects that are reshaping the area, including:

  • The planned move of the BBC to Digbeth.
  • Film studio developments spearheaded by creator Stephen Knight.
  • The future introduction of new tram access.

Together, these developments signal a transformative period for Digbeth, solidifying its future as a central pillar of Birmingham's cultural and social scene.
