A Memorable Family Adventure at Twycross Zoo

Located just a 30-minute drive from Birmingham, Twycross Zoo offers an exceptional day out for families, as recently discovered by a local parent and their one-year-old daughter. Despite not visiting since childhood, the writer found the zoo to be a delightful destination that exceeded expectations, with plans to return regularly.

Surprisingly Manageable Crowds and Abundant Animal Sightings

Visiting during February half-term, the family anticipated large crowds but found the zoo comfortably busy, allowing them to see nearly all the animals on their list. Contrary to some online reviews suggesting limited animal visibility, they observed a wide variety of species, including gorillas, gibbons, chimpanzees, tigers, giraffes, leopards, zebras, penguins, birds, and meerkats. Only rhinos and flamingos were missed, with the latter kept indoors for safety reasons.

The one-year-old was particularly fascinated by the gorillas in their outdoor enclosures, smiling as she watched them move around. She also enjoyed the meerkats, butterflies, and lorikeets, making the visit a sensory delight for her developing curiosity.

Engaging Attractions and Seasonal Considerations

While playgrounds and the splash park were less accessible due to chilly February weather, the zoo offers additional amenities like a soft play area for older toddlers, available at an extra charge. Multiple dining options and picnic benches provide flexibility for meals, whether bringing your own food or purchasing on-site.

Scattered throughout the park, Lego animal sculptures from last year's 'Bricktacular' event added charming photo opportunities, enhancing the visual appeal of the surroundings.

The Highlight: Gruffalo Discovery Land

The standout feature of the day was the Gruffalo Discovery Land, an interactive area based on the beloved Julia Donaldson book. Families can journey through the deep, dark wood, meeting characters like Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake, and the Gruffalo through buttons to press, spinning elements, touch-and-feel activities, and film clips. This section was the family's favourite, promising even more enjoyment as the child grows older.

Practical Information and Value for Money

Twycross Zoo proves to be great value, with adult tickets starting from £22.45, children's tickets from £16.45, and free admission for under-twos. Day admission includes free return visits for 12 months, adding to its affordability. Parking costs £3.50 per vehicle, and the zoo is located off Burton Road in Atherstone, CV9 3PX.

The family also attended the Lanterns of the Wild evening event, reviewed separately, and left with high praise for the overall experience. Twycross Zoo has quickly become a top contender for their new favourite family day out, combining educational fun, interactive elements, and convenient proximity to Birmingham.
