Pubs across England and Wales could be granted extended opening hours until 1am during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, under new plans proposed by the Labour government.
Late-night celebrations for key matches
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has launched a consultation on the move, which would see licensing hours extended for pubs if any of the home nations reach the quarter-finals, semi-finals, or final of the tournament. The World Cup is being held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico in the summer of 2026.
With kick-off times for UK viewers likely to be at 5pm, 8pm, 11pm, or even 2am, the government's plan specifically targets matches that begin at 9pm or earlier. This would allow pubs to serve until 1am, ensuring fans can celebrate or commiserate together without the party ending prematurely.
A vital boost for the hospitality sector
The hospitality industry has welcomed the proposal, highlighting the significant economic lift major sporting events provide. Lawson Mountstevens, boss of Star Pubs, stated that big tournaments typically increase trade by over 20%. "Big set-piece events like the World Cup are massive for bringing people together," he said.
Publican Mike Dove, who runs the Three Horseshoes in Witney, Oxfordshire, echoed the sentiment, promising a "heck of a party" if England progress. However, he also stressed the immediate need for support for struggling venues.
Economic and social benefits
Financial analysts point to the wider positive impact. Danni Hewson of AJ Bell noted that England's previous tournament runs boosted sales of food, drink, and betting, while also creating a general feel-good factor that increases consumer spending. "With UK economic growth flatlining in the last few months, the prospect of a summer of sport to lift the spirits could be just the tonic the economy needs," she added.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood framed the move as support for community hubs. "Our nations’ pubs are going into extra time," she said. "If any nation reaches the final stages, we will extend licensing hours. The party won’t end before the final whistle is blown." She concluded in a personal capacity, "It’s coming home."
The government's six-week consultation on the plan begins immediately, with the aim of implementing the rule change in time for the tournament in 2026.
