Spain Issues Severe Weather Alert for UK Tourists in Six Major Resorts
Spanish meteorological authorities have issued a dramatic weather warning for UK tourists visiting six key holiday resorts, effective from Saturday, March 14. The alert highlights an impending shift to storms, heavy rainfall, and potential snowfall, marking a significant cooling across the popular European Union destination.
Forecast Details and Regional Impacts
AEMET, Spain's national weather agency, has cautioned that an Atlantic front will cross the Iberian Peninsula, ushering in colder air from the north. This system is expected to cause precipitation in various areas, with a sharp temperature decline and possible snow in mountainous regions. Spokesperson Rubén del Campo explained that the passage of this front will trigger widespread weather disruptions.
The most affected areas include:
- Galicia
- Cantabrian region
- Pyrenees
- North of Castile and León
- Catalonia
- Balearic Islands
In the eastern peninsula and Balearic Islands, showers may intensify locally, accompanied by storms or hail, according to AEMET. Forecasters have described this as a dramatic shift in weather patterns, with impacts beginning on March 14.
Temperature Drops and Snow Predictions
Maximum temperatures in Andalucía are projected to fall below 16°C, while minimum values will range from 1°C in Granada to 10°C in Cadiz. Snowfall is anticipated at altitudes as low as 900-1000 metres, with depths potentially reaching 15 to 20 centimetres on the peaks of south-eastern mountain ranges by Tuesday. Earlier predictions indicated 5cm depths in areas like Cuenca del Genil, Guadix, and Baza.
AEMET forecasts very cloudy or overcast skies with scattered showers, more intense in the eastern interior, preceding the snowfall. This warning serves as a critical alert for UK tourists planning visits to these resorts, urging them to prepare for adverse conditions and potential travel disruptions.
