Sutton Coldfield Pub Closure Makes Way for New Independent Venue
Sutton Coldfield Pub Closure, New Venue Opening

The Slug and Lettuce, a well-known pub located on Birmingham Road in Sutton Coldfield, is set to close its doors permanently on Thursday, February 12, 2026, after serving the community for seven years. This closure marks the end of an era for the popular establishment, but it will soon be replaced by a new independent venue called The Distillery, which is scheduled to open shortly after on February 20, 2026.

Transition to an Independent Operation

This change represents a significant shift in the pub's business model. The venue is moving from a 'managed' operation under the Stonegate group to a 'leased and tenanted' model. This transition allows an independent operator to take over, bringing a fresh perspective and local touch to the premises. The new pub will be run by Paul Hayward, a Black Country businessman with experience in the hospitality industry.

What to Expect from The Distillery

While current staff members are expected to retain their positions, ensuring continuity in service, The Distillery will introduce several exciting updates. Patrons can look forward to a completely new menu, offering a range of culinary options to cater to diverse tastes. Additionally, the bar lines will be revamped, featuring popular beers such as Pravha and Staropramen, alongside a signature Distillery cider, crafted specifically for the venue.

Maintenance works are planned to be carried out during the transition period to refresh the space and align it with the new brand's vision. This change is part of a broader trend in the hospitality sector, where independent operators are increasingly taking over managed venues to offer unique and personalised experiences to customers.
