Weather Expert Issues Severe Warning for UK Tourists in Canary Islands and Portugal

A weather expert has issued a critical warning for UK tourists planning holidays to Tenerife and La Palma in the Canary Islands, as well as Madeira in Portugal, in the coming weeks. According to forecasts, these destinations are at the "highest risk" of experiencing heavy rainfall, with potential impacts on travel plans and safety.

High Rainfall Totals Predicted for Key Tourist Destinations

Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly highlighted on social media that there is a significant risk of high rainfall totals for parts of the Canary Islands and Madeira. He explained that while Ireland is expected to see drier weather due to high pressure, low pressure to the southwest of Spain could bring substantial rain to the western Canary Islands and Madeira.

O’Reilly specifically noted that La Palma and parts of Tenerife are at the highest risk, with models projecting up to 300mm of rain on La Palma and up to 270mm on Madeira over the next two weeks. He advised holidaymakers in these areas to closely monitor weather forecasts to stay informed and prepared.

Forecast Details and Regional Impacts

According to meteorological reports, the arrival of an Atlantic front is expected to bring widespread rainfall across northern Spain, with some regions facing particularly intense conditions. However, the Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, provides a nuanced forecast for Tenerife, indicating mainly clear skies or few clouds overall.

Despite this, AEMET predicts some cloud cover in the north and cloudy conditions in the northeast, with a low probability of light and sporadic precipitation. Light haze is also anticipated, more significant in the peaks and southern slopes, diminishing during the second half of the day.

Temperature forecasts suggest a slight rise in minimum temperatures, while maximum temperatures may decrease slightly. Additionally, a weak frost is not ruled out in the central highlands, adding another layer of complexity to the weather outlook.

Advice for Tourists and Travel Planning

This warning underscores the importance of staying updated on weather conditions when traveling to these popular destinations. UK tourists are urged to:

  • Check local forecasts regularly before and during their trips.
  • Be prepared for potential disruptions due to heavy rain.
  • Consider flexible travel arrangements to adapt to changing weather patterns.

As the situation evolves, keeping an eye on official updates from agencies like AEMET and weather experts can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable holiday experience in the Canary Islands and Portugal.
