Storm Goretti Forces Closures: West Midlands Attractions Shut Amid Snow Warning
West Midlands attractions close as Storm Goretti hits

A major winter storm has prompted the widespread closure of attractions across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Storm Goretti is set to bring significant snowfall and dangerous conditions to the region, leading to a series of pre-emptive shutdowns for public safety.

Amber Warning Sparks Precautionary Closures

The Met Office has issued a severe amber weather warning for snow across the West Midlands, effective from 8pm on Thursday, 8 January 2026. Forecasters predict that heavy snow is likely to cause considerable travel disruption and hazardous conditions from Thursday night into Friday. Some areas could see accumulations of up to 30cm of snow.

In response, several of the region's key cultural and leisure sites have announced closures. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will close its doors from 2pm on Thursday, 8 January and will remain shut throughout Friday, 9 January. A statement from the museum cited the need to ensure the safety of both staff and visitors.

Events Cancelled and Sites Shut Early

The impact of the storm extends beyond museums. The Young Voices concert, scheduled for Thursday night at the BP Pulse LIVE arena in Birmingham, has been postponed. Organisers stated that the safety of children, teachers, and families was their primary concern. They are working to arrange an alternative date for what is billed as the world's largest children's choir concert. The Friday performance is currently still planned to go ahead.

Further afield, the National Trust's Wightwick Manor & Gardens in Wolverhampton will close early, by 3pm on Thursday. The site has advised visitors planning trips from Friday onwards to check its status before travelling, as further snowfall may necessitate additional closures.

Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire is operating on a partially open basis, with areas including the lakeside walk, woodland, and adventure playground closed due to the conditions.

Weather Forecast and Ongoing Updates

The Met Office forecast for the region describes a cloudy start on Thursday turning increasingly unsettled as Storm Goretti arrives. Heavy rain and hill snow will spread during the afternoon, with snow becoming more widespread and reaching lower levels overnight, accompanied by brisk winds. Minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 0°C.

Authorities are urging people to avoid non-essential travel and to check for the latest information from transport providers and venues. The situation remains fluid, and further closures or disruptions are possible as the storm develops.
