Aston Villa Face £17m Hurdle in Dion Lopy Transfer

Aston Villa are facing an important summer transfer window ahead of the 2026/27 season, with reports indicating that their bid for Almeria midfielder Dion Lopy has fallen short of the Spanish club's valuation.

According to Spanish newspaper La Voz de Almeria, via Sport Witness, Aston Villa had made a €17 million (£14.5m) offer for the 24-year-old Senegal international. However, Almeria are holding firm on a €20m (£17m) asking price for the player, who is under contract until 2029.

Despite the gap in valuation, a summer move is described as a “real possibility”, and it is believed that a compromise between the two clubs can be reached. Lopy is reportedly viewed as “an ideal fit” for Villa’s midfield due to his “physicality, technical profile and competitive spirit.”

Background on Lopy

The midfielder first attracted Aston Villa’s interest three years ago, before he left Reims for Almeria in the summer of 2023 for a reported €6.5m (£5.6m). Since then, he has developed into one of Almeria’s prized assets. Crystal Palace, Salernitana, Marseille, and Everton have all been linked with the player at various times.

An indication that Lopy could be on his way this summer is that Almeria are “anticipating the future” by targeting Real Zaragoza’s Yussif Saidu as a potential replacement.

Villa’s Summer Plans

The transfer window for Premier League clubs opens on June 15 and closes on September 1. For Aston Villa, the summer is about ensuring boss Unai Emery has a squad capable of competing on two fronts, balancing the demands of the Premier League and Champions League football.

Would Lopy be a good signing for Villa? The club’s supporters will be watching closely as negotiations continue.
