Sunderland are reportedly targeting Aston Villa midfielder Lamare Bogarde as a potential replacement for captain Granit Xhaka, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea. According to Dutch publication Voetbal International, Sunderland hold a 'concrete interest' in the 22-year-old, but face competition from Brighton for his signature.
Xhaka's Future Uncertain
Granit Xhaka, who joined Sunderland last summer, has been linked with a return to London, with Chelsea reportedly interested. However, Chronicle Live understands that Sunderland have not received any formal approach from Chelsea, and Sky Sports reports that the Black Cats have no intention of letting Xhaka leave this summer. Despite this, Sunderland are reportedly preparing contingency plans in case the Swiss international departs.
Bogarde's Impressive Season
Lamare Bogarde enjoyed a standout season with Aston Villa, making 44 appearances across all competitions as Villa finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Europa League. He featured in 13 Europa League matches, though was an unused substitute in the final where Villa defeated Freiburg 3-0. Both Sunderland and Brighton are reportedly willing to pay a 'substantial fee' for the midfielder this summer.
Sunderland's European Ambitions
Under manager Regis Le Bris, Sunderland finished seventh in their first season back in the Premier League, securing a Europa League spot. With European football on the horizon, the club faces the challenge of building a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts. Bogarde's versatility and experience in European competition make him an attractive option.
Competition from Brighton
Brighton are also in the race for Bogarde, who has proven his ability in the Premier League and Europa League. The Seagulls are known for their shrewd recruitment and could provide stiff competition for Sunderland. It remains to be seen which club will secure the Dutchman's services.
