Birmingham City's goalkeeping department is set for a significant overhaul ahead of the new Championship season. With the summer transfer window approaching, securing the right goalkeeper is a top priority for the club.
Season Review: Beadle and Allsop Share Duties
James Beadle and Ryan Allsop split goalkeeping responsibilities during the 2025/26 campaign, with Beadle starting 38 matches compared to Allsop's 12. However, the team managed only 10 clean sheets across 50 games—eight with Beadle and two with Allsop—highlighting a defensive decline from the previous season.
James Beadle: Mixed Results on Loan
Beadle, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, showed flashes of quality, such as a double save against Blackburn Rovers and a penalty stop against Sheffield United's Sydie Peck. Yet, errors also crept into his game. At 21, he was one of the youngest regular number ones in the Championship, with only Sheffield Wednesday's Pierce Charles younger. His save percentage of 68.5% (FBREF) outperformed Allsop's 57.6%, confirming he was the club's best goalkeeper. Brighton may now decide to sell or loan him further, as they did with Carl Rushworth at Coventry City.
Ryan Allsop: Content as Backup
Allsop signed a contract extension through 2028 after losing his starting spot, indicating his satisfaction at the club. Manager Chris Davies consistently referred to having two number ones, but Allsop's shot-stopping remains a concern despite his excellent distribution. At 34 and back in his hometown, Allsop is likely to compete for the starting role next season.
Brad Mayo: Future Uncertain
Mayo, a 21-year-old Brummie goalkeeper, has yet to make a senior appearance for Blues despite being on the bench five times last season. His contract expires this summer, and while he is a popular dressing-room figure, he may seek first-team football elsewhere. Keeping him as third choice could be an option.
Transfer Priorities
Blues need at least one new goalkeeper, with Allsop currently the only confirmed squad member. A new contract for Mayo would avoid the need to sign a third-choice keeper. Replacing Beadle is the primary target. Davies previously floated the idea of signing Beadle permanently, but Brighton may opt to loan him out again to gain more experience. If not Beadle, an experienced Championship goalkeeper would be ideal.
