Lidl Plan for Harborne Day Centre: Opportunity and Traffic Concerns
Lidl Plan for Harborne Day Centre Sparks Traffic Concerns

A major supermarket chain is proposing to take over a former council centre in Birmingham, sparking both excitement and concerns among residents. Lidl has announced plans to convert the former Harborne Day Care Centre, located off West Boulevard in Quinton, into a new branch. The site, which was sold off as part of council budget cuts last year, has been described as a brownfield site that the German budget chain promises to 'bring back into life', creating 40 jobs in the process.

Community Reaction

Families were devastated when the day centre was closed and sold. Councillor Sam Forsyth expressed mixed feelings, stating: 'I remain devastated that the council wantonly sold Harborne Day Care Centre and inflicted such heartbreak on many vulnerable Quinton residents and their carers.' However, he acknowledged that Lidl is a well-respected supermarket chain offering value for money, calling it a 'welcome addition to Quinton’s retail offering'. He urged Lidl to employ local people and address traffic concerns, particularly on West Boulevard, which is already known for speeding and dangerous driving. He also highlighted the need to consider the nearby Woodhouse Primary School, especially at the beginning and end of the school day.

Local Resident's Perspective

Mike Clarke, who runs a Quinton Facebook page, echoed the sentiment that the closure of the day centre was devastating but irreversible. He sees the Lidl proposal as 'a real opportunity for Quinton'. However, his main concerns revolve around traffic, especially during school hours. He said: 'Vehicles turning into and out of Lidl could create congestion or safety issues, and I would expect Lidl to address this properly, whether that’s through traffic lights, a safe turning system, or a well-designed car park layout.' He noted that with Asda and Tesco already nearby, a Lidl could be a positive addition for the community.
