On the Claret & Blue podcast, Dan Rolinson and Mat Kendrick shared their immediate reactions to the news. Mat Kendrick expressed mixed feelings, saying: "I'm not necessarily disappointed with it. I'm not sure what cut Middlesbrough have of the deal, but whichever way you carve it up, Villa have done remarkable business. I always put this in Dwight Yorke terms: it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all."
Dan Rolinson was more pragmatic: "I'm completely at peace with this. I've said all summer that he'd go, and we'd need to use the money for a rebuild. I think the fee is remarkable, to be honest. I don't think he's worth £117 million."

Villa originally paid £15 million for Rogers and have now secured a massive profit. However, Dan Rolinson warned that the funds must be reinvested wisely: "We still need to spend another £50-75 million on top of everything we've already done. If the money for Manzambi, Gomes and Palhinha is coming out of the Rogers pot, we're in trouble. We still need a couple of wingers, a No. 10, a right-back and a left-back."
Mat Kendrick questioned why Chelsea, a club without European football, is seen as more attractive than Villa, who have Champions League qualification. "Why is Chelsea now considered the bigger club because of their past glories?" he asked.

Dan Rolinson emphasised the need for continuity: "I said Martinez and Watkins need to stay. We need some continuity with the rest of the group. Any further major first-team sales would concern me, regardless of the money."
