Seven individuals have appeared in court charged with conspiring to defraud a Shrewsbury woman of £140,000 through a cryptocurrency scam. The case, heard at Telford Magistrates' Court, underscores the rising threat of digital asset fraud.
Details of the Alleged Scam
Prosecutors allege that the group targeted the victim between December 2020 and March 2021, convincing her to transfer large sums into cryptocurrency accounts. The suspects, aged between 22 and 55, face charges of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation. They include both men and women from various parts of the UK.
Court Proceedings
During the hearing, the defendants were granted bail with conditions, including curfews and bans on using cryptocurrency platforms. The case has been adjourned to a future date at Shrewsbury Crown Court. Detective Constable Sarah Jones of West Mercia Police said: “This was a sophisticated operation that exploited the victim’s trust. We urge the public to be vigilant when approached with investment opportunities.”
Impact on the Victim
The victim, a 67-year-old retiree, reportedly lost her life savings. She described the ordeal as “devastating” in a statement read to the court. The case highlights the need for greater awareness about cryptocurrency scams, which have surged in recent years.
Broader Context
According to Action Fraud, UK victims lost over £300 million to crypto scams in 2022 alone. West Mercia Police have launched a campaign to educate residents about such schemes, emphasizing that legitimate investments never demand immediate payment in cryptocurrency.
