Tesco Expands Aldi Price Match to Over 2,000 Express Stores
Tesco Expands Aldi Price Match to Express Stores

Tesco is rolling out a major pricing change across more than 2,000 UK stores, expanding its Aldi price match scheme into its convenience store network in a move aimed at helping shoppers cope with continued cost pressures. The supermarket said the scheme will now be available in over 2,000 Tesco Express branches, meaning selected everyday items will be priced in line with discount rival Aldi.

It marks the biggest expansion of the price match initiative since it was first launched in 2020. More than 200 products are included in the updated scheme, although Tesco said the exact range will vary depending on store size and location. Items covered will include household staples such as pasta, milk, iceberg lettuce and tinned tuna, all marked with an 'Aldi Price Match' label.

Commitment to Affordability

Tesco UK chief executive Ashwin Prasad said the move was designed to ease pressure on household budgets. He said: "We know that household budgets are again under pressure, but we are committed to keeping the cost of the weekly food shop affordable for Tesco customers. By extending our Aldi Price Match scheme to Express stores we can now give customers the confidence that they can get great prices on a range of everyday products at Tesco, whether that's in our large stores, online or in more than 2,000 of our local convenience stores."

Intensifying Supermarket Competition

The expansion comes as competition between major supermarkets intensifies. Sainsbury's extended its own Aldi Price Match scheme in November 2024, while Co-op introduced a similar initiative in 2025, writes Neil Shaw from Devon Live.

Food Inflation Concerns

The move also comes against a backdrop of ongoing concerns about food inflation. Research from the Bank of England has shown retailers expect grocery price inflation could rise to as much as 7% next year, as firms continue to revise their cost forecasts upwards.

History of Tesco Express

Tesco Express first launched in 1994 as a small-format neighbourhood store concept, with early sites opening in London. The chain expanded rapidly, reaching 1,000 stores by 2009 and more than 2,000 by 2023. Today, Tesco Express stores typically offer around 3,000 product lines focused on everyday essentials and high-frequency purchases in local communities across the UK.
