Birmingham City are not looking to hijack Derby County’s attempt to sign Sammie Szmodics, BirminghamLive understands. The former Blackburn Rovers forward spent the second half of last season on loan to the Rams from parent club Ipswich Town.
Szmodics’ impact at Derby
He made 13 appearances, scored three goals and assisted one other operating as a No. 10, as John Eustace’s men just came up short in their bid to reach the play-offs. With Ipswich now in the Premier League, Szmodics’ situation is up in the air and it looks as though the Rams want to sign the 30-year-old permanently.
Blues’ stance clarified
Blues were also credited with an interest but we have been told they are not pursuing the Republic of Ireland international. As things stand, Blues have Jay Stansfield as the most obvious fit to play behind first choice striker August Priske, although Marvin Ducksch remains on the books, albeit he is currently injured.
Kanya Fujimoto has also played that role in pre-season but was barely used by Chris Davies last term, after joining last summer. With Kyogo Furuhashi having moved to LA Galaxy, Blues will need to add in central attacking positions but as things stand they won’t be doing so with Szmodics.
