The Co-op has announced a significant new initiative for shoppers visiting its stores in the evening. The retailer is rolling out a 'Too Good To Waste' scheme across its stores, providing Members with a generous 50% discount on its entire loose in-store bakery range every day after 6pm.
How the 'Too Good To Waste' Initiative Works
This new programme is designed with a dual purpose: to tackle the critical issue of food waste while simultaneously offering added value to loyal Co-op Members. The discount is automatically applied from 6pm daily and covers all loose and unpackaged items within the in-store bakery. Shoppers can look forward to half-price treats such as All Butter Croissants, delicious Bakery Cinnamon Swirls, and classic bread rolls and baguettes.
The Co-op identified that many of its Members, including those in Birmingham, often shop for freshly baked goods later in the day. This initiative perfectly caters to that habit, whether customers are seeking an evening snack or need to replenish their bread supply at home.
Doing Your Bit for the Planet
Charlotte Waring, a Co-op Buyer, commented on the launch, emphasising the company's role as a convenience retailer. She stated, "Our new Too Good To Waste initiative is a simple way to help our members save while also reducing food waste - so everyone can enjoy delicious bakery treats and do their bit for the planet." She added that whether it's a croissant, cinnamon swirl, or a classic bread roll, there's a half-price option for every taste.
This waste-cutting scheme coincides with the launch of Co-op's Christmas sandwich range. In a charitable move, £50,000 from the sales of Co-op’s core Christmas sandwiches, which includes a new Festive Onion Bhaji Sandwich, will be donated to the children's charity, Barnardo's.
This donation is part of Co-op's broader national partnership with Barnardo's, which has an ambitious goal to raise £7 million. The funds are dedicated to supporting positive futures for one million young people across the UK. The partnership was extended in June 2025 after it successfully raised £5 million, already helping nearly 600,000 young people.
