Birmingham's The Wilderness Restaurant Awarded Coveted Michelin Star After a Decade
Birmingham Restaurant Wins Michelin Star After 10 Years

Birmingham's vibrant culinary scene has received a significant boost as a beloved city restaurant has been awarded a prestigious Michelin Star, marking a decade since its opening. The Wilderness, located on Warstone Lane in the historic Jewellery Quarter, achieved this top culinary honour at a ceremony held in Ireland on Monday, February 9.

A Decade of Dedication Culminates in Michelin Success

Chef patron Alex Claridge, the creative force behind The Wilderness, was present in Ireland to accept the award. This recognition comes after a remarkable few months for Claridge, whose second establishment, Albatross Death Cult, was ranked higher than any other restaurant in Birmingham in the Harden's Guide last December. The Michelin Star for The Wilderness underscores the chef's consistent commitment to culinary excellence and innovation.

The Unique Dining Experience at The Wilderness

The Wilderness is renowned for its distinctive 'rock n roll' approach to fine dining. Guests indulge in seasonal dishes from provocative and playful tasting menus, all set to a soundtrack of heavy metal, rock, and punk music. This unique blend of high-quality cuisine and an edgy atmosphere has made it a standout destination for food enthusiasts seeking something beyond the conventional dining experience.

When asked about what drives Birmingham's flourishing restaurant scene, Claridge highlighted the city's balanced attitude. He remarked, "Birmingham doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's serious about food, and I think everyone wants to have a good time." He added, "There are lots of great things happening sometimes in spite of the things going on around us, but we keep going." This philosophy reflects the resilience and creativity that characterise the local hospitality industry.

Birmingham's Growing Michelin Star Portfolio

With this award, The Wilderness now joins an elite group of Birmingham restaurants holding Michelin Stars. It stands alongside city centre spot Adams and Simpson's in Edgbaston, both of which have one star. Meanwhile, Opheem on Summer Row, the acclaimed Indian restaurant created by chef Aktar Islam, proudly holds two Michelin Stars, showcasing the diversity and depth of the city's culinary offerings.

Celebrations Extend Beyond Birmingham

The good news was not confined to Birmingham alone. Lichfield also celebrated a new Michelin Star, with The Boat, Liam Dillon's restaurant and micro-farm, winning its first star. This establishment joins Upstairs by Tom Shepherd, which has held a star since 2022, highlighting the broader regional strength of the Midlands' dining scene.

The Wilderness is situated at 27 Warstone Lane, Jewellery Quarter, B18 6JQ, while The Boat can be found on Walsall Road, Summerhill, Muckley Corner, Lichfield, WS14 0BU. These addresses now represent beacons of culinary achievement, drawing food lovers from near and far to experience their award-winning menus.
