After more than four decades serving the local community, a beloved family-run stationery shop in West Sussex has announced its imminent closure, leaving loyal customers heartbroken.
A High Street Staple Bows Out
Clarkes of Sussex, a cherished independent retailer, revealed via social media that it will be shutting down its Burgess Hill store this April. The business has been a fixture on the high street for over forty years, with owner Jay Patel dedicating thirty-five of those years to serving the community.
In an emotional online post, Mr Patel shared that "the time has come" for the store to close its doors permanently. While an exact date in April has not yet been confirmed, the announcement has sparked an outpouring of support and sadness from long-standing customers.
Community Reaction to the Closure
Since the news broke, shoppers have taken to social media to express their dismay at losing a local institution. One regular customer commented: "You will be sorely missed. It’s always such a pleasure to come to your shop."
Another added: "This is such sad news," while a third shared: "I have used your store for many years and you have always been helpful, respectful and kind." A fourth customer reflected the general sentiment, stating: "Really sorry to hear this - such a wonderful shop and lovely staff."
Owner's Emotional Farewell
Jay Patel posted a heartfelt message explaining the difficult decision to close the Burgess Hill branch. "It is with mixed emotions that I share the news of the closure of Clarkes," he began.
He continued: "After more than 40 years of serving this wonderful community, and following my own 35 years journey here, the time has come for us to close our doors this April."
Mr Patel emphasised the personal connections formed over the decades, saying: "Above all else, I will remember you, your kindness, loyalty and the many conversations we have shared. I have had the privilege of watching your families grow and seeing friendships form over the years."
He added: "You have been far more than customers. You have been an important part of my life. Thank you for your continued support through both the good times and the more challenging ones."
Broader Business Context
This closure follows the earlier shutdown of the Clarkes of Sussex branch in Brighton, which operated for twenty-five years before closing. The business continues to operate other stores across Sussex, including in Haywards Heath, though the Burgess Hill closure represents a significant loss for that specific community.
Mr Patel concluded his message by saying: "Although this chapter is coming to an end, the memories, friendships, and connections we have built together will remain with me always. I will greatly miss seeing you, talking to you, and being part of your daily lives."
He finished: "From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being such an important part of my journey. I wish you happiness, good health and every success in the future."
The closure highlights the ongoing challenges facing independent retailers on British high streets, particularly family-run businesses that have served communities for generations.
