Hobbycraft Completes CVA Repayments Ahead of Schedule

Hobbycraft, the UK's largest arts and crafts retailer, has successfully exited its Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) 18 months ahead of schedule. The company, which entered the CVA in 2020 to manage debts during the pandemic, has now repaid all creditors in full, thanks to a boom in screen-free hobbies and a new model-making culture.

Sales Surge Driven by Crafting and Model Kits

The retailer reported a 15% increase in sales over the past year, with particular growth in categories such as knitting, painting, and model kits. According to Hobbycraft CEO Dominic Jordan, the trend towards offline activities has been a key driver. "Customers are increasingly looking for ways to disconnect from screens and engage in hands-on, creative pursuits. Our model-making range, including Airfix kits and Lego, has seen a resurgence, appealing to both children and adults," he said.

Expansion and Investment Plans

With its debt burden lifted, Hobbycraft plans to invest in new store openings and refurbishments. The company currently operates 96 stores across the UK and aims to expand into new locations, focusing on community hubs. Jordan added, "We are excited to invest in our stores and online platform to make crafting accessible to even more people. The CVA exit allows us to focus on growth and innovation."

Industry Context and Competitor Performance

The arts and crafts market has outperformed other retail sectors, with a 10% year-on-year growth according to industry data. Competitors like The Works and Paperchase have also benefited, but Hobbycraft's early CVA exit signals strong financial health. The company's turnaround strategy included cost-cutting measures and a focus on high-margin own-brand products, which now account for 40% of sales.

Future Outlook and Trends

Looking ahead, Hobbycraft expects continued demand for screen-free activities, with new product lines in sustainability and upcycling. Jordan commented, "We see a long-term shift towards mindful, creative hobbies. Our goal is to inspire everyone to make something, whether it's a model, a painting, or a knitted scarf." The retailer also plans to enhance its online tutorials and workshops to support this trend.
