John Lewis Expands as Insurance Broker for 1.4M Customers

John Lewis Transforms into Authorised Insurance Broker

John Lewis has announced a significant strategic shift by becoming a fully authorised insurance broker, a move set to expand its financial services arm and benefit approximately 1.4 million existing finance customers. The high street department store chain, which operates a store in Solihull and previously had a Birmingham branch, is now regulated and authorised by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Expanding Insurance Offerings and Partnerships

This authorisation enables John Lewis to offer a wider range of insurance products and services to more customers under various circumstances. The expansion specifically focuses on home insurance, with the firm collaborating with a panel of leading insurers including Axa, Prestige Underwriting, and Covea Insurance.

James Mack, director of John Lewis Money, explained: "By becoming an authorised broker, we're taking a significant step in our strategy to make John Lewis Money more relevant to our customers. People have long placed their trust in us, and this move allows us to offer a broader range of cover to meet their needs."

He added that moving away from a "one size fits all" approach allows the company to use its independence to act as an advocate for customers, helping them find quality coverage that aligns with the peace of mind expected from the John Lewis brand.

Industry Response and Strategic Context

Marco Distefano, managing director at Axa UK Retail, commented: "This is an exciting opportunity, with two reputable brands coming together to deliver valuable protection options for insurance customers across the UK."

This insurance expansion comes as John Lewis recently withdrew from a £500 million deal to build nearly 1,000 residential rental homes in Bromley, Reading, and West Ealing, citing a "cautious property market" and "fundamental shift in economic conditions." Despite this, the retailer expressed continued conviction in the build-to-rent sector, emphasizing that collaboration remains vital to address the UK housing crisis.

Brendan Geraghty, chief executive of the Association for Rental Living, noted: "This is deeply disappointing news and a real loss for consumers. John Lewis brought something genuinely different to rental living – a trusted consumer brand, a service-first culture, and a long-term commitment to quality that institutional investors and residents alike responded to."

The transformation into an insurance broker represents a strategic pivot for John Lewis, leveraging its trusted brand reputation to diversify financial services while navigating challenging economic landscapes in other business areas.
