North Devon Hospice is using Make a Will Month to urge local residents to put legal plans in place, highlighting the financial and emotional consequences of dying without a Will. The charity stresses that clear instructions not only protect loved ones but also provide essential funding for patients with serious health conditions across the region.
Low Will ownership across the UK
Research cited by the hospice shows that only 37 per cent of adults in the UK currently have a valid Will. A further 34 per cent say they plan to write one soon, but many continue to delay the task.
Failing to leave clear instructions can lead to significant financial and emotional stress for grieving families during an already challenging period, the charity warns.
Hospice chief executive speaks out
Stephen Roberts, chief executive at North Devon Hospice, said: “The consequences of not writing a Will are something we sadly see often here at the hospice. For those who have lost a loved one, the sentimental pressures of respecting someone’s wishes can often leave families or friends facing uncertainty and stress.”
He continued: “More than this, we also see the substantial administrative burden that not having a Will has on family and friends during an already difficult time. As such, writing a Will is something we encourage everyone to do no matter your age, as you never know when you or those you love might need it.”
Legacy gifts fund one in four patients
Gifts left in Wills fund the care for one in four patients at the local hospice. These donations are essential because NHS funding does not cover the full cost of end-of-life care across the region.
Stephen added: “At North Devon Hospice, 1 in 4 patients are cared for thanks to gifts in wills. This means that 25% of people would not get the care and compassion we all deserve, as they approach the end of life, were it not for generous people remembering the hospice in their Will.”
He continued: “Every gift, whether a fixed sum, share of an estate, or specific item, helps us to be a shining light in the dark for local people facing a life-limiting illness now and in the future.”
