Major UK Retailer Enters Administration After 55 Years
A significant UK retail chain has collapsed into administration, leading to the imminent closure of 137 stores across the country. The Original Factory Shop, which has served communities for over five decades, announced this drastic move following severe trading challenges.
Store Operations and Final Sales
All 137 retail locations will remain open temporarily as joint administrators Richard Harrison and James Clark assess future options for the business. During this period, stores are offering discounts of up to 50% on remaining stock, though these bargains are strictly while supplies last.
The company's online store has been permanently closed, and all physical branches will continue operating normally throughout the administration process. Customers are encouraged to visit their local stores to take advantage of the final clearance offers.
Gift Card and Return Policy Updates
Shoppers holding The Original Factory Shop gift cards can still redeem them, but only in physical stores – online redemption is no longer possible. This policy remains in effect while administrators evaluate the business's future.
Regarding returns and exchanges:
- Goods purchased before January 28, 2026, can be exchanged for items of equal or lesser value with proof of purchase
- Items bought on or after January 28, 2026, are sold as seen, with returns accepted only for faulty merchandise
- Online orders placed before the administration date will be delivered as scheduled
- All refunds require authorization from store managers
Administrator's Statement and Employee Support
Rick Harrison, managing director at Interpath Advisory and joint administrator, expressed regret about the situation: "The Original Factory Shop has long-been a cornerstone of local high streets up and down the country. Unfortunately, trading challenges have impacted the business such that the Company had to be placed into administration."
Harrison confirmed that administrators will work closely with the company's dedicated employees to maintain store operations as a going concern during the assessment period. The administration team emphasized their commitment to supporting staff through this transitional phase.
This collapse marks the end of an era for a retailer that has been part of UK high streets since the 1970s, highlighting ongoing challenges in the traditional retail sector.
