Morrisons has confirmed the full list of stores where it is bringing back its Market Street counters, reversing a decision to axe 70 meat and fish counters last year that sparked shopper backlash.
Background to the reinstatement
The supermarket chain originally removed 35 meat and 35 fish counters as part of a cost-cutting drive. It also closed 52 cafes, 13 florists, four pharmacies, and all 18 branches of its Market Kitchen format. However, after listening to customer feedback, Morrisons is now planning to reopen a number of these counters over the coming months.
Full list of stores
The locations where counters will be reintroduced include: London Queensbury, Chapel-en-le-Frith, London Enfield, Speke, Bath London Road, Todmorden, St Helens Baxter’s Lane, and Porth. The counters have already reopened at Great Park in Newcastle, Herne Bay, Thornbury, Yeadon in Leeds, and Bolton Dawes.
Company statement
A Morrisons spokesman said: "Our Market Street counters are part of our DNA. They're at the heart of our offer and a real differentiator for Morrisons. We closed a small number of meat and fish counters last year - and have learned a lot from that. We've listened to customers and are now planning to re-open a number of these over the coming months."
The spokesman added: "The first meat and fish counters have already re-opened at Great Park Newcastle, Thornbury, Herne Bay, Yeadon and Bolton Dawes, with more to follow soon."
Operational improvements
The re-opened counters will incorporate flatbeds and grab-and-go options, along with significant learnings on yield and waste that the business has made over the last twelve months, to make them more efficient while delivering the traditional counter service that customers love.
