M&S to Close Swansea Flagship Store, Putting 92 Jobs at Risk
M&S Swansea Store Closure: 92 Jobs at Risk

Marks & Spencer Announces Closure of Swansea Flagship Store

Marks & Spencer has confirmed the impending closure of its flagship store in Swansea, a decision that places 92 staff members at risk of redundancy. The Oxford Street branch, which has served the south Wales city for decades, is set to shut down as part of the retailer's nationwide store rotation strategy.

Underperformance and Operational Challenges Cited

According to M&S, the Swansea store has been underperforming for an extended period and faces significant practical and operational issues that would require substantial investment to address. Richard Owen, M&S regional manager, explained that changing customer shopping habits have necessitated adjustments to the company's store portfolio to ensure long-term growth.

"The Swansea store has been a key part of the community for many decades," Owen stated. "Unfortunately, it is not viable to keep the store open as the building faces practical and operational issues requiring significant investment, the store has underperformed over a long period and we must prioritise long-term growth decisions."

Support for Affected Staff and Future Plans

All 92 employees were informed of the closure on Tuesday morning, February 24. M&S has emphasized its commitment to supporting colleagues through consultation processes, including efforts to find alternative roles at nearby stores where possible. The company also plans to continue serving Swansea customers through other local stores and online while actively searching for a suitable location for a future full-line M&S store in the city.

Swansea Council expressed disappointment at the news, acknowledging the impact on both staff and shoppers. The council noted that M&S confirmed the current building and location no longer align with their business model, which has seen 90 historic locations close nationwide as the company invests in new store formats.

Council Response and Regeneration Efforts

The council revealed that it had spent several years working to prevent the closure at this location and will continue efforts in the coming weeks and months to identify a new site that meets M&S's requirements. "M&S recognises the significant Swansea regeneration which is under way and they stated they remain committed to exploring options for an alternative store location in the city," a council spokesperson said.

The council stressed that M&S has clarified this decision is not a reflection on Swansea as a retail destination but rather part of its broader national strategy. "We remain determined to ensure the city centre continues to grow and attract major brands," the spokesperson added, while expressing immediate concern for the affected staff and pledging support during this period of uncertainty.
