Primark to launch online shopping in biggest change ever

Primark, which operates its world's biggest store in Birmingham, is reportedly set to make the long-awaited move into online shopping, marking one of the biggest changes in its history across the UK.

Primark to go online

According to reports, Primark will soon begin online trading. The Times newspaper reports that Primark “knows it needs to go online” to keep up with the current shopping market. This move comes as Primark tries to rival fast-fashion competitors like Shein, Temu, and TikTok Shop.

Currently, Primark offers a click and collect service, launched in 2022, which allows shoppers to place an order online and pick it up in store. The retailer has previously suggested that its customers are looking for better digital tools, with the latest reports following the launch of Primark's first mobile app in the UK in April this year.

Mobile app launch

The app offers customers personalised notifications, real-time stock checks, store information, and curated favourites. Following launches in Ireland and Italy last summer, the UK “all-in-one” platform also makes shopping via Primark’s popular Click & Collect service more accessible.

Speaking on the app launch, Matt Houston, Chief Customer & Digital Officer at Primark, said: "Customers are increasingly turning to digital tools that make shopping easier and more rewarding, and we’re confident that our app will deliver an intuitive, personalised experience that’s been carefully designed to help them get the most out of every Primark visit."

Demerger from parent company

By the end of 2027, Primark is set to be spun off from its parent company, Associated British Foods (ABF). Michael McLintock, Chairman of ABF, said: “The board has now completed its in-depth review of the structure of ABF and has concluded that a demerger of Primark is the best way to maximise long-term returns for shareholders, reflecting Primark’s scale today and the need for a better understanding of the Food business.

“The opportunities ahead for both Primark and Food are considerable and the board firmly believes that each will thrive as an independent entity.”
