Major UK Shoe Retailer Enters Administration, Gift Cards Invalidated
The iconic British high street footwear chain Russell & Bromley has collapsed into administration, with administrators confirming that gift cards and loyalty points will not be honoured during its nationwide closing down sale. This development marks a significant blow to customers holding unused vouchers for the premium brand.
Next Acquires Brand for £3.8 Million Amid Job Losses
Fashion retailer Next has stepped in to rescue Russell & Bromley out of administration in a deal worth £3.8 million. However, the acquisition comes with substantial job cuts, as approximately 400 positions are likely to be lost across 33 stores not included in the transaction. Next will only retain three locations: stores in Chelsea, Mayfair, and the Bluewater shopping centre, along with about 48 store staff members.
Bright yellow signs declaring “EVERYTHING MUST GO” and “STORE CLOSING DOWN” have been prominently displayed across Russell & Bromley outlets, signalling the end of an era for the chain founded in 1879 in Eastbourne, East Sussex. The brand currently operates from 36 stores and nine concessions throughout the UK and Ireland.
Administrators Advise Customers on Gift Card Queries
In official FAQs, Next has advised affected shoppers to contact the administrators directly regarding any issues with gift cards. The retailer stated unequivocally: “Russell & Bromley cannot honour gift cards. These can no longer be used and we will not be able to honour these. For any queries about these please contact the Administrators.” Customers are directed to email customer.experience@russellandbromley.co.uk for assistance.
Administrator Interpath, led by UK chief executive Will Wright, has committed to continuing trading at the remaining stores for as long as feasible while exploring all available options. Wright praised the brand's legacy, noting: “Across its 147-year history, Russell & Bromley has been at the forefront of contemporary style. We’re pleased therefore to have concluded this transaction, which will preserve the brand and the commitment to quality craftsmanship that it has become so well known for.”
Next Aims to Revive Brand's Core Mission
In a statement released last month, Next outlined its intention to return Russell & Bromley to its foundational principles. The company pledged to uphold “the design and curation of world-class, premium footwear and accessories for many years to come,” aiming to reinvigorate the brand's market presence despite the current turmoil.
The collapse of Russell & Bromley highlights ongoing challenges in the UK retail sector, particularly for traditional high street chains facing economic pressures. As administrators manage the wind-down of operations, customers are urged to act promptly regarding any outstanding gift cards or loyalty points to mitigate potential losses.
