UK households now have a convenient new option to turn their unused smartphones into cash at more than 1,300 high street stores across the country. This initiative comes from a partnership between AO World-owned MusicMagpie and Timpson, following a successful four-month trial period.
How the In-Store Smartphone Trade-In Service Works
The service allows customers to bring their old or unused devices into participating Timpson stores, where they will be evaluated on the spot. Once the assessment is complete, payment is issued within mere minutes, providing an immediate financial return for technology that might otherwise be gathering dust at home.
Addressing the UK's Unused Smartphone Problem
Recent research has revealed that approximately 73 per cent of individuals in Britain possess at least one unused smartphone, with the average device valued at around £250. When calculated across the population, this represents an astonishing £10 billion worth of dormant technology sitting in drawers and cupboards nationwide.
The findings also indicate a strong consumer preference for face-to-face transactions when it comes to trading in devices. According to reports, 68 per cent of people prefer this personal approach, with a quarter of respondents citing immediate payment as their top priority when disposing of old technology.
Business Leaders Hail Partnership as Milestone
Steve Oliver, managing director and co-founder of MusicMagpie, described the nationwide launch as a "huge milestone" for the business. He explained: "We know that apathy is the biggest barrier to trading in old tech. The ability to 'Take it to Timpson' now makes it a no-brainer for customers who can get cash in only a few minutes for their old smartphone at over 1,300 Timpson sites."
Sid Hubbard, group director at Timpson, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how the initiative aligns with the company's existing focus on repairing goods and extending product lifespans. "Adding Magpie to 1,300 Timpson stores across the UK is a huge milestone for us," Hubbard stated. "This partnership means that most people in the UK are now just minutes from turning their unused tech into hundreds of pounds of instant cash."

The scheme aims to remove the traditional hassles associated with selling old technology privately, while simultaneously encouraging more people to extract maximum value from devices they no longer use. By providing a straightforward, accessible service with immediate financial rewards, the partnership hopes to significantly reduce the amount of valuable technology going to waste.
Customers can now participate in this service at any of the 1,300 participating Timpson stores located throughout the United Kingdom, bringing unused smartphones directly to the counter for instant valuation and cash payment.
