Tesco Faces Festive Backlash Over Quality Street Pricing

Shoppers have launched a furious backlash against Tesco, branding a pre-Christmas price change for Quality Street tins as 'disgusting'. The outrage erupted after a customer shared a photo in the Newton Abbot Facebook group, showing the iconic 750g tins priced at a staggering £12.00 in the local Tesco store.

Customer Outrage and Social Media Reaction

The post, made on the morning of November 14, 2025, read: 'What on earth is going on….. Tesco Newton this morning charging £12.00 for a tub of Quality Street!!' This price point means customers are paying £1.60 per 100 grams for the festive favourite. The criticism was swift and severe on social media.

One person responded by suggesting, 'Gullible people will buy them because it’s Christmas,' while another criticised the product's contents, stating it was 'full of palm oil and less chocolates for your money .. not worth buying even at a reduced price.' Another comment simply declared, 'Should be paying less,' with a further shopper noting, '£12 for a half empty tin of sweets. I’ll give them a miss.'

The Tin vs. Tub Price Debate

The controversy highlights a significant price disparity based on packaging. While the 750g tin is selling for £12, a direct comparison reveals that a 550g plastic tub retails for just £6. This works out at a much more palatable £1.09 per 100 grams.

Shoppers were quick to identify the packaging as the likely culprit for the inflated cost. One commenter explained, 'It’s the tins though not plastic tubs they do cost more.' Another added, 'It’s because of limited edition tin hence the price- plastic tubs were on clubcard offers.' A fellow customer concluded, 'Chocolate prices have gone crazy anyway but yes. The tin won’t help the price,' while another lamented, 'The only difference is… its in a tin. You pay less for a plastic tub. Thats whats wrong with the world.'

This pricing strategy has put a dampener on the festive spirit for many, as Quality Street is a traditional go-to for UK households during the Christmas period, competing directly with other assortments like Cadbury Heroes, Cadbury Roses, and Celebrations.
