UK Broadband Costs Rank Fifth Cheapest in Northern and Western Europe
New research from UK broadband comparison service Broadband Genie has revealed that the United Kingdom offers some of the most affordable broadband services in its region. The study, which analyzed 2,631 broadband tariffs across 214 countries, positions the UK as having the fifth-cheapest broadband in Northern and Western Europe.
Average Monthly Costs and Global Positioning
Broadband contracts in the UK carry an average monthly cost of $31.43, equivalent to approximately £23.00. This figure is based on the median cost of broadband contracts, ranking nations from the most economical to the most expensive. While the UK performs strongly within its immediate European context, its global standing drops to 70th place out of 214 countries. This places it behind several European neighbors, including Italy in 62nd position, France at 63rd, and Spain ranking 65th.
Alex Tofts, a broadband expert at Broadband Genie, commented on the findings, stating, "Our Global Broadband Price League offers a snapshot of the fixed-line broadband market across the world, showcasing what consumers can sign up to today. The study highlights how competitive and reasonably priced broadband is in the UK right now. The majority of broadband shoppers have a wide range of options to choose from, in terms of both providers and connection speeds."
Significant Savings Opportunities for Consumers
Tofts further emphasized that approximately 8.8 million broadband bill payers in the UK are currently out of contract and free to switch to more affordable alternatives. However, it is crucial to note that the research exclusively examines the retail price of fixed-line broadband connections. Fixed-line access is not the default in every nation, with many regions relying heavily on mobile data for internet connectivity.
Global Comparisons and Regional Trends
The study provides a stark contrast when comparing the UK to other major economies. The United States, for instance, has an average broadband cost of $80.00 per month, roughly £58.54, placing it a disappointing 167th in the global rankings. Other economic powerhouses show varied results: China achieves an impressive 16th place, Germany falls to 105th, India secures 8th position, and Japan lands at 76th.
Emerging markets typically demonstrate lower broadband costs. Egypt leads with an average monthly expense of just $7.91, about £5.79, earning it a top 10 spot at 6th place. Other emerging economies like Vietnam rank 11th, Brazil 47th, and the Philippines 78th.
Regional Breakdown: Eastern Europe vs. Polynesia
At a subregional level, Eastern Europe emerges as the most affordable area for broadband services. Three nations from this region feature in the top 10 cheapest countries globally: Ukraine holds 2nd place, Romania is 7th, and Russia ranks 10th.
In stark contrast, Polynesia is identified as the most expensive subregion worldwide. The average broadband cost here soars to $118.48 per month, approximately £86.70. Most nations in Polynesia rank far outside the top 100, with examples including Samoa at 128th, Tonga at 172nd, American Samoa at 174th, French Polynesia at 180th, and Wallis and Futuna at the very bottom in 214th place. Niue stands as the sole outlier in the region, achieving a respectable 53rd ranking.
