Discount supermarket giant Aldi has launched its annual festive appeal, calling on customers across the UK to support their local food banks this winter. The retailer has published a list of the most urgently needed items to guide generous shoppers.
Soaring Demand Amid Cost of Living Pressures
The appeal follows stark research from Aldi's charity partner, Neighbourly, which highlights the immense strain on community organisations. Four out of five charities report increased demand for their services over the last six months. Alarmingly, demand for food banks and food provision is predicted to rise by nearly 30% during the colder months.
Nine in ten organisations attribute this surge to the ongoing cost of living crisis. The research underscores what donations mean on the ground: 66% of local charities say essentials like food and toiletries are their top priority, while 57% note that toys and gifts make a meaningful difference to families at Christmas.
Aldi's Guide to Essential Donations
To make giving easier, Aldi is sharing a specific list of in-demand products. Shoppers can pick up these items and leave them at dedicated community collection points in any Aldi store nationwide. All donations are then passed directly to local good causes.
The most needed items this Christmas include:
- Tinned food and cooking sauces
- Tea, coffee, and breakfast cereals
- UHT milk and juices
- Rice, pasta, and condiments
- Festive treats and toiletries
- Laundry and cleaning products
- Baby essentials and pet food
- Children’s gifts, toys, and games
Making a Direct Impact in Local Communities
Aldi expects to donate an estimated one million meals to charities, community groups, and food banks across the UK over the festive period. This direct support complements the public donation drive.
Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said: "Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for foodbanks and local charities supporting those in need. In the past, our customers have been incredibly generous. By sharing the list of most-needed items, we hope to make it even easier for people to donate this festive season."
Steve Butterworth, CEO of Neighbourly, added: "Many foodbanks and community groups are under huge pressure this winter. Aldi’s continued commitment to helping local causes – and making it simple for customers to donate what’s needed most – will make a real impact in communities across the UK as many struggle through the cost-of-living crisis."
