Alabaré's Landmark Big Sleep Event Targets Veteran Homelessness Crisis at St Paul's Cathedral
In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, the charity Alabaré is set to host its iconic BIG Sleep event at the historic St Paul's Cathedral on Friday, June 26. This marks the first-ever public sleep-out at the world-renowned site, designed to raise critical awareness and funds to combat the cycle of homelessness among veterans across the United Kingdom.
Stark Statistics Reveal Urgent Need for Action
The event comes against a backdrop of distressing figures. During the 2023-24 period, a total of 2,270 veteran households in England were recorded as being at risk of or actually experiencing homelessness. On a UK-wide scale, estimates suggest that approximately 7,500 veterans are currently homeless, sleeping rough, or residing in refuges.
In London alone, the situation is particularly acute, with 13,231 people sleeping rough between April 2024 and March 2025. This represents a significant 10% increase compared to the previous year, underscoring the growing urgency of the homelessness crisis in the capital.
Personal Stories of Hope and Transformation
The impact of Alabaré's work is vividly illustrated through personal testimonies. One veteran, Ian, who served in the military from 2009, found himself street homeless just twelve months ago. After accessing Alabaré's emergency bedspaces, his future was uncertain.
Today, Ian has moved into a home he helped construct through Alabaré's innovative Veteran Self-Build Scheme. Over the past year, he has acquired valuable construction skills and secured full-time employment, showcasing the charity's holistic approach to support.
Alabaré provides comprehensive assistance to veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness, including essential mental health care, practical skills training, and clear pathways to independence. Their mission is to provide homes, restore hearts, and empower minds, creating lasting positive change.
