A fundraiser has been launched following the tragic death of Anisha Chakraborty, a 28-year-old international student from India who was struck by a black Audi RSQ8 on Dartmouth Middleway in Birmingham city centre early on Saturday, May 30.
Victim Identified
Anisha Chakraborty, described as a 'lovely' and 'kind' person by her manager, worked part-time at the Jimmy Spice's restaurant on Broad Street. She was in the UK on a post-study work visa and hoped to build a career in marketing in Birmingham.
Her restaurant manager, Shefali Karulkar, has set up a fundraising campaign to repatriate Anisha's body to India and cover funeral costs. Speaking to BirminghamLive, Shefali said: 'Anisha was a kind and lovely person, a quiet person who would always have a conversation with you. We used to go for a drink once in a while. She was in the process of looking for a job in her field and wanted to work in marketing.'
Fundraising Efforts
Shefali, herself a former international student from India, added: 'This fundraiser is important. She was an international student and her family don't speak English. It's a very difficult situation and they don't know what to do. To know you've lost your life in a country where you know no-one, I still feel how I did when I first found out.'
Arrest and Investigation
A 22-year-old man was arrested by West Midlands Police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs. He has since been bailed pending further inquiries.
Police have urged anyone with information, including dashcam footage, to come forward. They can be contacted via Live Chat on the West Midlands Police website, by calling 101 quoting log 460 of May 30, or by emailing sciu@westmidlands.police.uk.
