New research reveals that communities across the UK are eager for closer local connections, yet many feel disconnected. The B&Q Foundation is responding by launching its first-ever BB&Q weekend from June 12 to 14, with stores hosting fundraising activities and barbecue events to bring people together.
The research, commissioned by B&Q on behalf of the B&Q Foundation, found that while many value their local area, 42% do not feel connected to those around them, and one in five have meaningful conversations with neighbours less than once a month. However, two-thirds believe sharing food is one of the easiest ways to unite people, rising to 78% among 25-34 year olds. Additionally, three in five would be more likely to attend a local event if it supported a charitable cause.
BB&Q Weekend Events
The BB&Q weekend will see stores across the UK host fundraising barbecues, inviting customers to enjoy food from the grill in exchange for a donation. All proceeds support the B&Q Foundation, an independent charity that provides grants to improve living spaces and gardens for local communities.
For example, a store at Lysander Road, Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, BS10 7TX, will host an event on June 13 from 12pm to 3pm. B&Q also encourages people to host their own BBQs at home, turning summer gatherings into fundraising opportunities with downloadable materials available at diy.com/bq-bbq.
Addressing Disconnection
The research highlights that feeling disconnected impacts charitable engagement: 13% do not donate to local charities because they lack community connection. While 22% are too shy or anxious to connect, over half would feel comfortable attending a charity event alone, showing how shared causes can initiate connections.
B&Q asks customers to donate just £1 for any home BBQ, and will donate £15 for every barbecue sold between June 5 and 18. All funds support local charities helping people experiencing homelessness or unsuitable housing.
Katherine Paterson, marketing director at B&Q and Trustee at the B&Q Foundation, said: 'We're incredibly proud of the work that the B&Q Foundation does and that - in just six years - it has already raised more than £10m for local charities across the UK. The charity is ambitious to do more, and this research shows that people want to support their local community but often don't know where to begin. The BB&Q events will help by not only fundraising but also creating opportunities for people to come together and build the local community connections they're looking for.'
