The B&Q Foundation is launching its first-ever BB&Q weekend from June 12 to 14, with stores hosting fundraising activities and barbecue events for communities. This initiative comes as new research reveals a strong appetite for closer local connections across the UK.
Research Findings
The study, commissioned by B&Q on behalf of the B&Q Foundation, found that while many people value their local area, 42% say they do not currently feel connected to those around them. One in five (19%) have meaningful conversations with neighbours less than once a month. However, two-thirds (67%) believe sharing food is one of the easiest ways to bring people together, rising to 78% among 25-34 year olds. Additionally, three in five (60%) people say they would be more likely to attend a local event if it supported a charitable cause.
Event Details
The BB&Q weekend will feature events at B&Q stores across the UK, including a specific event in Stockport. Customers are invited to enjoy food from the grill in exchange for a donation, helping to fund local charity projects. The foundation is an independent charity that supports local communities through grants to improve living spaces and gardens.
How to Get Involved
B&Q is encouraging people to host their own BB&Qs at home, turning summer gatherings into opportunities to give back. Downloadable fundraising materials are available at diy.com/bq-bbq. The company asks customers to donate just £1 to the B&Q Foundation for any barbecues they host at home. Additionally, B&Q will donate £15 for every barbecue sold between June 5 and 18 to the foundation.
All money raised goes directly to support local charities working to improve lives for people experiencing homelessness or unsuitable housing.
Community Impact
The research suggests that feeling disconnected can impact charitable engagement, with 13% saying they do not donate to local charities because they do not feel connected to their community. While one in five (22%) say they are too shy or socially anxious to connect, more than half (52%) would feel comfortable attending a charity event alone, highlighting how shared causes can help people take the first step.
Katherine Paterson, marketing director at B&Q and Trustee at the B&Q Foundation, said: "We're incredibly proud of the work that the B&Q Foundation does and that - in just six years - it has already raised more than £10m for local charities across the UK, helping people experiencing homelessness or unsuitable housing. The charity is ambitious to do more, and this research shows that people want to support their local community but often don't know where to begin. The BB&Q events will help by not only fundraising but also creating opportunities for people to come together and build the local community connections they're looking for."
